What is Covered.ir?

Covered.ir is a free public dashboard showing the current state of Iran's network connectivity: the quality of domestic routes between the country's cities and datacentres, and the quality of international routes to datacentres outside Iran.

Instead of a bare up-or-down light, it measures what actually matters: route latency, the percentage of packets lost, and how steady both stay over time. Those three numbers are the difference between a healthy network and one that is technically connected but unusable.

What are domestic routes?

A domestic route has both ends inside Iran — for example from a datacentre in Tehran to one in Mashhad, or between two operators in the same city. Degradation here typically shows up in domestic services, banks, payment gateways and local cloud platforms.

What are international routes?

An international route has one end outside Iran — for example Tehran to datacentres in Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Istanbul or Dubai. These routes pass through a small number of gateways, so a problem on them tends to become visible sooner and affect more services at once.

What is latency?

Latency is the round-trip time for a packet, measured in milliseconds. Domestic routes are usually under 30 ms, and European routes around 90–120 ms. A sudden jump in latency, even with no packet loss, normally means traffic has been rerouted or a gateway is saturated.

What is packet loss?

Packet loss is the percentage of data packets that disappear in transit and never arrive. Below 0.1% is effectively invisible; around 1% becomes noticeable in video calls and online games; above 5% is usually experienced as severe slowness or a service that keeps dropping. Because the useful range spans several orders of magnitude, the packet-loss chart uses a logarithmic axis.

How are outages shown?

Every route is in one of four states: healthy, degraded, incident, or down. The overall status at the top of the page is always the worst state currently observed — if a single route is red, the headline does not stay green. The exact boundaries between these states, and how often they are measured, are set out on the methodology page.
